3rd Place State Cross Country Jr. High Girls
3rd Place State Winners
Posted on 10/25/2018
The 2018 PCJH Girls Cross Country team won 3rd Place at State bringing home a trophy. Team members are Kayla Welter, Lilith Ibata, Ahry Comer, Jasmine Coram, Brileigh Wise, Gracie Markus, Kenna Welter. Ahry Comer and Gracie Markus received medals for Top Ten finishers for Class S girls.
At the 2018 SIJHSAA Class S Cross Country State Meet on October 13, an impressive 217 girls toed the line to compete on the 1.86 mile course. Medals are given to the top 50 individual runners and trophies awarded to the top four teams. Team scores are calculated based on the finish positions of the first five runners from each team to cross the line. The lower the team score, the better. In 2017, the girls team had fallen short of placing for a trophy by a mere five points, and they were determined not to let that happen again. When the gun shot was heard, the seven girls in maroon took off with a goal of placing in the top four. Their hard work and persistence paid off -- with 30 school teams completing, the girls earned the third-place team trophy.
Individually, Pope County did an outstanding job. In the girls race with 217 runners, Ahry Comer finished 2nd place overall with a time of 11:22 (6:07/mile pace) and Gracie Markus in 6th place with a time of 11:44 (6:18/mile pace). The boys race had a total of 250 runners, and Eason Comer took the stage to receive a medal for 26th place with a finish time of 11:19 (6:05/mile pace).
Although the other members of the cross country team didn't receive top 50 medals, every single runner on the team shaved time off their previous finishes, setting new personal records for themselves. It was an excellent season and we are looking forward to even more success in 2019.
